According to Chinese medicine, the main cause of cardiovascular disease is that the heart and kidneys function as a whole is disturbed. In addition, the energy flow in the heart and lungs is blocked. There is a lack of energy in the heart and spleen. The energy stagnates in the heart and liver.

Heart diseases can be treated well by acupuncture supplemented with medical massage. The main acupuncture points include Neiguan, Tanzhong and Heart Yu.

In phytotherapy, heart diseases are mainly treated with sage and Panax ginseng to strengthen blood circulation and remove blood stasis.

Acupuncture influences the function of the heart. It exerts an inhibitory effect on the cerebral cortex via the central nerves and nerve segments. It also causes dilation of the coronary arteries, increased blood flow and improvement of myocardial ischaemia.

Acupuncture has been shown to have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system via neurohumoral pathways. In addition to the sympathetic, vasodilatory and cardioprotective effects of acupuncture, these substances can particularly improve cardiac function and quality of life in congestive heart failure.
