According to traditional Chinese medicine, wind and heat pathogens penetrate the throat, lungs and stomach, causing heat to build up in the corresponding meridians. On the one hand, wind, heat and fire pathogens build up in the throat; on the other hand, physical weakness, overwork and long-term illnesses lead to damage to the lungs and kidneys. Deficiencies can lead to inflammation, which causes a burning sensation and pain in the throat.
In acute cases, treatment with acupuncture can have a rapid effect and the accompanying local inflammation subsides. However, in chronic cases, such as a swollen and sore throat with a lack of heat, the onset of effects is slow and a combination with Chinese herbs is often recommended.
