Urge urinary incontinence

Urge incontinence is a manifestation of overactive bladder syndrome, i.e. the patient has a strong urge to urinate but cannot control it voluntarily, so that the urine flows out through the urethra. Common causes of urge incontinence are ageing of the detrusor muscle, cardiovascular disease and early diabetes mellitus. Urge incontinence is usually caused by urinary tract infections and neuropathy, and the main cause should be actively treated to prevent urge incontinence from occurring.

Symptoms

  • Frequent sudden and strong urge to urinate

  • Pain when urinating

Acupuncture is effective in treating this condition, it can regulate the bladder function through acupoints, which increases the tone of the urethral sphincter and the tension of the tissues around the urethra. The symptoms of urinary incontinence can be significantly improved. Acupuncture can also influence the bladder emptying centre through nerve reflexes to achieve regulation of bladder function, or directly stimulate the pelvic nerve, lower abdominal nerve and pubic nerve to regulate bladder function through the sacral medullary bladder emptying centre, improve bladder elasticity and stability, and help the detrusor and sphincter muscles coordinate with each other to achieve the therapeutic purpose.
